How Does WD Keep Projects Moving When Demand Suddenly Increases?
When demand rises unexpectedly, can your project still stay on track?
In the wind power industry, projects usually progress at a steady pace. But during periods of rapid market growth, the situation can look very different.
Annual demand can increase significantly, while requests for new product development emerge within a short period of time.
One of our customers, a leading planetary gearbox manufacturer, experienced exactly this challenge.
At that point, the issue was no longer about a single product. It was about managing the development and supply pressure created by multiple new projects moving forward simultaneously.

The Challenge Isn't Whether It Can Be Done — It's Whether It Can Be Done Fast Enough
When multiple new requirements appear at the same time, the reality often looks like this:
- New bearing types continue to be introduced before previous development projects are completed.
- Every model requires separate confirmation, communication, and adjustments.
- Some products can be developed, but only after waiting for available development capacity.
- Others require additional modifications shortly after development is completed.
Over time, the impact becomes increasingly visible:
- Development schedules begin to slow down.
- Project progress starts to encounter bottlenecks.
- Significant resources are required for coordination and follow-up.
At this stage, what affects project progress is no longer the product itself. The real question becomes:
Is there a supplier capable of supporting all of these requirements at the same time?

WD's Approach: Building Capability Before Demand Arrives
In this project, WD did not begin preparing only after demand started to increase.
Through years of focus on the wind power industry and continuous cooperation with planetary gearbox manufacturers, WD has accumulated extensive application experience and product development expertise.
This means:
- Many bearing types do not need to be developed from scratch.
- Development, testing, and application validation can begin more quickly.
- Multiple bearing types can be developed and advanced simultaneously.
When Demand Peaks, the Difference Becomes More Visible
During the period when this customer's demand was growing most rapidly:
- WD completed the development of more than 30 new products within a single year.
- These products covered over 80% of the customer's bearing type requirements.
For wind turbine gearbox projects, this represented more than an increase in development volume. More importantly, projects continued moving forward without being delayed by individual bottlenecks.
Development schedules remained on track, and the customer did not need to continuously coordinate between different suppliers and development resources.

It's Not About Doing More — It's About Being Ready
Successfully completing new product development is only the first step. The ability to maintain supply and production responsiveness is equally important.
One of the reasons WD is able to maintain project momentum during periods of concentrated demand is that preparation begins long before requirements become urgent.
On one hand, WD has established a comprehensive RN and RNN product portfolio, covering a wide range of bearing requirements commonly seen in wind gearbox applications.
On the other hand, we prepare key raw materials in advance and maintain inventory at the forging stage, enabling faster response through continuous inventory turnover.
In addition, based on:
- Historical customer demand
- Ongoing project communication
- Changes in industry demand
WD makes early production planning and resource allocation decisions before formal requirements are released.
As a result, many products have already entered the development or production process before customer demand is officially placed.
Conclusion
When demand remains stable, the differences between suppliers may not be immediately apparent. But when growth accelerates, the results become much clearer.
The key question is no longer who can supply a product. It is who can continue supporting project progress when demand grows rapidly.
That is what WD has always been committed to doing:
Helping customers keep their projects moving forward without being held back by development or supply constraints.
